Montréal-based media artist Frédéric Lavoie was commissioned by SAW Video to create a site-specific exhibition responding to the space of Arts Court. The resulting project, Fantomatique, is an immersive multi-disciplinary spectacle that investigates the history of the building as the former site of the Carleton County Courthouse and Jail. Through video, audio, photography, drawing and sculpture, Lavoie’s project shows how the building’s history lingers on in the present day, how the old architecture occasionally reveals itself, and how the old aura of discipline and surveillance can still sometimes be detected. Various elements of the exhibition ask the viewer become like a prison guard by asking them to look closely at small details and be vigilant of aberrations in the normal order of things. Arts Court also has a reputation for being haunted, and Lavoie uses the idea of ghosts as a metaphor for the ways in which the past can return to infiltrate the present. The video piece at the center of the exhibition weaves a path through air ducts, drain pipes and cracks in the walls, taking the viewer on a trip around the site that only a phantom could accomplish, and uses a variety of cinematic tricks to simulate paranormal activity.
